Applebiters is a book-discussion group. Our reading and sharing encompass a wide range of topics, with an emphasis on feminist/womanist theology and experience. Our regular format includes gathering for a carry-in simple supper, followed by a discussion of books we each have been reading and would like to describe to the group.

Spread the word, exciting things are happening at Applebiters, a group of book lovers who gather at Columbia United Church of Christ, 3201 I-70 Dr. NW
September 26, 2009 (Sat 5-7pm) We have chosen to discuss Columbia’s One Read book, Andrea Barrett’s The Air We Breathe. We have a group pack from the Library. This will make it easy for the first 10 readers to get a copy. For your copy or any questions, contact Joan ASAP. The Library also has audio format. The author will lecture in Columbia on September 17!
October 18, 2009 (Sunday 1:30 pm) We are putting together a tour of The Sacred Feminine Exhibit at the Museum of Art & Archeology. This is very exciting because with a group of 8 or better a docent will lead us, answer questions, and generally make a good thing even better. Bring friends!
November 14, 2009 (Saturday 5-7pm) Back to our regular format, bring food and some books you love… and conviviality will be had by all.

The Sacred Feminine Tour October 18
In 1945, a papyri cache discovered at Nag Hammadi in Egypt yielded the controversial Gospel of Philip, in which Mary Magdalene is singled out as the most important apostle. This discovery inspired a generation of scholars whose interest peaked not only in the mysterious Maria of Magdala, but also in the role of women in early Christianity and other religions. The exhibition seeks to weave together the many cultural traditions involving women and religion and invites viewers to examine parallels and differences in various aspects of the “sacred feminine.” The exhibition spans both East and West, from the pagan cultures of the ancient Mediterranean through early and later Christianity, in addition to parallels in African, Asian and Pre-Columbian religions. Among themes included will be virginity, fertility and motherhood; the role of mortal women, from consorts and devotees of gods, to “divine” queens who styled themselves as goddesses; opposing aspects associated with the female persona such as power and wisdom but also danger and capriciousness; and finally, in the modern period, more broadly interpreted views of women and the spiritual. Don’t miss this fantastic experience. Please sign up by Aug 29. Call the church, 445-7931 or Joan and we’ll have an info packet for you.
This very exciting Fall is a great time to tell your friends and bring along anyone who has shown interest in Apple Biters.
