Who We Are at CUCC & What We Believe:
Columbia United Church of Christ practices a freedom of faith. It is intentional in broadness of scope, valuing diversity and variety. Believing that each one is created by God, members are sensitive to and value each other's individuality. We are a welcoming and all-inclusive community of Christian faith. As we often say: “No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!”
As we worship God together, services are warm, inviting, and relaxed, with innovative presentations of scripture, sermons and music. All ages are included in worship and education programming is available for children, youth and adults. Through lighthearted fellowship activities and meaningful discussions, all are encouraged to develop genuine friendships.
Columbia United Church of Christ is a congregation of people who are of: "Warm Heart, Open Mind and Generous Spirit"
What is distinctive about the United Church of Christ?
The United Church of Christ national denomination formed in 1957 when the Evangelical and Reformed Church joined with the Congregational Christian Church. These names give a glimpse into the character of the United Church of Christ. As Christians we declare ourselves to be a part of the body of Christ and to continue to witness, as did the earlier disciples, to the reality and power of the crucified and risen Jesus Christ. Like other churches which developed through the reformed movement, we confess the authority of one God,affirm the primacy of the scriptures, the doctrine of justification by faith, the priesthood of all believers, and the principles of Christian freedom. We celebrate two sacraments-baptism and the Lord's Supper.
The basic unit of the United Church of Christ is the congregation. Within each congregation members covenant with one another and with God as revealed in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit. As Christians we are commissioned to evangelize, that is to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, expressed each Sunday as we gather to worship God and throughout the week as we serve humankind. The United Church of Christ is a united and uniting church, as reflected in our motto, "That They All May Be One" (John 17:21).
The United Church of Christ is a free and responsible church. No one dictates to a local congregation or to individual Christians what they must do. Freedom is guaranteed. But it is a freedom in Christ -- every decision will be made in the light of the gospel. We are a Church of the people. Every person is an essential part of the body of Christ.
